Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is an antiviral medication that suppresses and reduces the spread of influenza A and B viruses. It blocks the neuraminidase enzyme, preventing the virus from moving from infected cells to healthy ones. This action stops the production of toxins that cause severe flu symptoms and shortens the duration of illness by about one and a half days when treatment begins within 48 hours of symptom onset.
It can also be used as a prophylactic after close contact with an infected person, with a recommended dose of 75 mg once daily for 10 days.
Treatment (adults and children ≥1 year): 75 mg taken orally twice daily for 5 days.
Prophylaxis (adults and children after exposure): 75 mg once daily for 10 days.
Pediatric dosing: Adjust the dose according to the child's weight.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bronchitis, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. Rare but serious reactions may involve sudden confusion, delirium, hallucinations, unusual behavior, or self‑injury. Allergic reactions and worsening of diabetes have also been reported.
Do not use a nasal influenza vaccine (FluMist) within 48 hours after taking Tamiflu. Provide your doctor with a complete list of all prescribed, over‑the‑counter, herbal, vitamin, and mineral products you are taking.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is less than two hours before your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.
Signs of overdose may include nausea and vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose.
Store at room temperature between 20 °C and 25 °C (68 °F – 77 °F). Keep the medication away from moisture and heat.
