Afrin (oxymetazoline) is a topical decongestant prescribed for temporary relief of nasal congestion caused by colds, hay fever, sinusitis, or other upper respiratory conditions. It works by constricting swollen blood vessels in the nasal passages, improving airflow.
Afrin is typically used as 1–2 sprays in each nostril every 10–12 hours, not exceeding 2 doses in 24 hours. Shake the bottle gently before each use. Do not use for more than 3 consecutive days to avoid rebound congestion.
Before using Afrin, inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes, or glaucoma. Prolonged use may cause nasal irritation or dependence, so avoid extended use.
Do not use Afrin if you are allergic to oxymetazoline or any ingredient of the spray. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe cardiovascular disease or untreated high blood pressure.
Common side effects may include temporary burning, stinging, sneezing, or dryness in the nose. Rare but serious side effects can include increased blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or severe allergic reactions.
Afrin may interact with other sympathomimetic medications or drugs for high blood pressure. Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over‑the‑counter products, and supplements you are taking.
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
Overuse may cause severe nasal irritation, headache, high blood pressure, or rapid heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Afrin at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
