Common Use
Zyvox is a synthetic oxazolidinones antibiotic containing linezolid. It is effective against infections caused by Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumonia), Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus agalactiae (skin infections, including diabetic foot infections).
Dosage and Direction
Take Zyvox orally every twelve hours or as prescribed by your doctor. It is recommended to take it at evenly spaced intervals, with or without food. Do not stop treatment prematurely, even if symptoms improve, as this may lead to the development of resistant strains. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve within 10 days.
Precautions
- Lactic acidosis may occur if Zyvox is taken for more than 28 days. Report symptoms like light-headedness, dizziness, extreme weakness, low body temperature, rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, sleepiness, slow or irregular heartbeat, stomach discomfort, or muscle pain to your doctor.
- Prolonged use (over 28 days) may cause blurred vision or changes in color perception. Seek immediate medical attention if vision changes occur.
- The liquid formulation contains phenylalanine, which is unsafe for patients with phenylketonuria.
- If taking SSRIs, be aware of serotonin syndrome symptoms: drowsiness, euphoria, rapid muscle contraction and relaxation, dizziness, restlessness, coordination problems, sweating, and fever. Avoid high-tyramine foods like aged cheese, fermented meats, red wine, tap beers, soy sauce, and improperly refrigerated protein-rich foods.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have hypertension, blood disorders, allergies, or chronic infections.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to oxazolidinones antibiotics.
Possible Side Effects
- Common side effects: Diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting, trouble sleeping, or rash.
- Seek immediate medical attention for unusual symptoms like easy bruising or bleeding, severe dizziness, severe headache, vision changes, tingling or numbness of extremities, or fever.
Drug Interaction
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- Apraclonidine, brimonidine, buspirone, bethanidine, bupropion, carbamazepine, entacapone, dextromethorphan, herbal products (ma huang), indoramin, papaverine, meperidine, sibutramine, SSRI antidepressants (fluoxetine, citalopram), tolcapone, sympathomimetics (methylphenidate, ephedrine), tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, doxepin), "triptans" (sumatriptan, zolmitriptan).

Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
