Common Use

Zovirax is an antiviral medication used to treat herpes infections of the skin, lips, and genitals, as well as herpes zoster and chickenpox. It works by stopping viral replication but is not effective against certain viruses, such as those causing the common cold.

Dosage and Direction

Take Zovirax orally with or without food or milk. The standard dose is 200 mg every 4 hours, five times daily for ten days. For recurrent herpes, adults are typically prescribed 400 mg twice daily for one year. Washing your hands frequently can help prevent spreading the infection to others.

Precautions

• Headache, light-headedness, or swelling in the hands or feet.

Drug Interactions

Zovirax may interact with medications such as probenecid (Benemid), tizanidine, varicella virus vaccine, fosphenytoin, phenytoin, and valproic acid. Drug interactions do not always require stopping a medication but may alter its effects. Consult your doctor for guidance on managing these interactions.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take double or extra doses.

Overdose

Symptoms of Zovirax overdose may include seizures, hallucinations, or reduced urination. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Storage

Store Zovirax at room temperature, between 59-77°F (15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use it after the expiration date.
