Zithromax is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic related to erythromycin, effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. These include Staphylococcus species (S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, S. agalactiae), Haemophilus influenzae and parainfluenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Bacteroides fragilis, Escherichia coli, Bordetella species, Borrelia burgdorferi, Haemophilus ducreyi, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. In vitro, it also shows activity against Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Toxoplasma gondii, and Ureaplasma urealyticum. As a macrolide antibiotic, Zithromax inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, preventing bacterial growth and spread. It is used to treat infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract (tonsillitis, otitis, sinusitis, pneumonia), urogenital infections (urethritis, prostatitis, cervicitis, adnexitis caused by chlamydia, gonorrhea, early syphilis), intestinal infections, and stomach or duodenal ulcers.
Take Zithromax exactly as prescribed. Do not stop treatment even if symptoms improve without your doctor's approval. Take the tablet with a full glass of water. For the liquid suspension, mix one dose packet with 2 ounces of water, shake well, and drink immediately. Do not use the suspension if prepared more than 12 hours prior. Tablets and suspension can be taken with or without food, but capsules should be taken on an empty stomach, 2 hours before or after a meal.
There is no evidence on whether Zithromax affects an unborn baby or is excreted in breast milk. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only use this medication if the expected benefit outweighs potential risks to the baby.
Zithromax is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or related drugs.
Side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, irregular heartbeats, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, fever, rash, red skin, or headache. Contact your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms occur.
Avoid taking Zithromax with aluminum- or magnesium-based antacids (e.g., Mylanta or Maalox), as they can reduce its absorption in the intestine.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule.
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Zithromax at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not store the liquid suspension for more than 10 days.
