Common Use

Geodon is prescribed to treat schizophrenia and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. This medication works by binding to dopamine D2-receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A-receptors, helping to regulate brain chemistry. It is believed to block serotonin and dopamine receptors while inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, contributing to its antipsychotic effects.

Due to potential serious side effects, Geodon is typically used only when other treatments have been ineffective. It is approved for:

• Schizophrenia
• Bipolar disorder (acute manic/mixed episodes)

Dosage and Direction

The typical starting dose for adults is 40 mg taken twice daily, adjusted based on individual needs. Geodon is available in capsules of 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg.

• Maximum daily dose: 160 mg
• Take with food to improve absorption.
• Dosage adjustment may be required for patients with liver impairment.

Precautions
