Zestril is classified as an ACE inhibitor. It works by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, reducing arteriolar resistance, increasing venous capacity, enhancing cardiac output, and lowering renovascular resistance. It is commonly prescribed to treat congestive heart failure, hypertension, and to improve survival rates following a heart attack.
Take Zestril exactly as directed by your doctor, with or without food, at the same time each day. If you take antacids, wait at least two hours after taking them before consuming Zestril, as antacids may interfere with its absorption.
Zestril is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, pregnancy, or a history of angioedema.
Zestril may cause elevated potassium levels, which in rare cases can lead to muscle weakness or an extremely slow heartbeat. Other potential side effects include:
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe side effects such as changes in urine volume, vision problems, loss of consciousness, impotence, chest pain, jaundice, yellowing of the eyes, or dark urine.
Do not take Zestril with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics. Combining Zestril with injectable gold may result in facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, and hypotension.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to compensate.
If you suspect an overdose and experience extreme dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Zestril at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F) in a light-resistant container.
