Xyzal is a third‑generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, and to treat chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic reactions. Xyzal provides fast onset of action and long‑lasting relief, with minimal drowsiness in most people.
The typical adult dose is 5 mg taken once daily, usually in the evening. It can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed with water. For children, the dose and form (tablet or syrup) depend on age and body weight and should follow a doctor's instructions. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Before taking Xyzal, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, epilepsy, or urinary retention problems. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you, as drowsiness is rare but possible. Avoid alcohol, as it may increase sedation. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before use.
Xyzal should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment or known hypersensitivity to Xyzal, cetirizine, or any excipients in the formulation. It is contraindicated in children under 6 months of age unless specifically prescribed. Avoid use in patients with galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose‑galactose malabsorption, depending on the formulation. Always read the label for specific warnings.
Most people tolerate Xyzal well. Common side effects may include dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness, and headache. Less common reactions are abdominal pain, nausea, or irritability in children. Seek medical attention if you experience allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.
Xyzal may interact with alcohol, sedatives, sleep aids, or other CNS depressants, potentially increasing drowsiness. Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking, especially muscle relaxants, anxiolytics, or antidepressants. No significant food interactions have been reported.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose - do not double up. Resume your normal dosing schedule.
An overdose may cause extreme drowsiness, agitation, restlessness, or, rarely, confusion. Children may be more sensitive to overdose effects. In case of suspected overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Treatment is usually supportive.
Store Xyzal at room temperature (20 °C to 25 °C / 68 °F to 77 °F), away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep tablets or syrup in their original packaging. Do not use after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
