Nevirapine is an antiviral medication that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from multiplying in your body. It is used to treat HIV, which can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, Nevirapine is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.
Nevirapine is typically taken once daily for the first 2 weeks, then increased to twice daily. Starting with a lower dose helps reduce the risk of skin reactions. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage frequency.
Do not use Nevirapine if you are allergic to it or have moderate to severe liver disease. It should not be used as the only HIV medication, as HIV/AIDS is usually treated with a combination of drugs. Avoid alcohol, unprotected sex, and sharing personal items like razors or toothbrushes.
Your doctor or pharmacist can manage drug interactions by adjusting your medication or monitoring your treatment closely. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you are using. Do not start, stop, or change doses without consulting your doctor.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
In case of an overdose, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include skin rash, headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, fever, and breathing difficulties.
Store Nevirapine at room temperature (59-86°F or 15-30°C) away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not store it in the bathroom.
