Verampil works by slowing the transmembrane transportation of Ca2+ ions to cells in the coronary arteries (which supply the heart) and other arteries in the body. This action relaxes the smooth muscles of the arteries. Its active component is verapamil hydrochloride. This medication is used to treat conditions such as stenocardia, supraventricular tachycardia, sinus tachycardia, atrial tachyarrhythmia, atrial flutter, atrial arrhythmia, hypertension, hypertensive crisis, and primary pulmonary hypertension.
Patients with stenocardia or supraventricular tachycardia should take Verampil three times a day, while those with arterial hypertension should take it twice a day. The dosage depends on the disease, age, and severity of the condition. Always consult your doctor before starting the medication.
Verampil may affect thinking or reactions, so be cautious when driving or performing tasks that require concentration and quick reflexes. Avoid standing up too quickly from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness. Do not consume alcohol and consult your doctor if you drink grapefruit juice, as it may interact with Verampil and cause potentially dangerous effects.
Verampil is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, severe arterial hypotension, pregnancy, breastfeeding, atrioventricular block (first and second degree), sinoatrial blockade, sick sinus syndrome (except patients with a cardiostimulator), Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), and Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome in combination with atrial fibrillation/flutter. Some other conditions require careful use of this medication. Always follow your physician's prescription and recommendations.
Common side effects of Verampil include irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), slow heart rate (bradycardia), constipation, dizziness, nausea, low blood pressure, and headaches. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious symptoms such as chest pain, heart attack, stroke, significant water retention, difficulty breathing, very low blood pressure, hallucinations, psychotic problems, breast enlargement in men, or signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., rash, hives, itching, swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing/swallowing).
Taking Verampil with a beta blocker may cause dangerous heart slowing. This medication increases blood levels of digoxin, theophylline, carbamazepine, and muscle relaxants, so monitor these levels to avoid toxicity. In some patients, lithium levels may decrease.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medication to make up for a missed dose.
If you suspect an overdose of Verampil and experience symptoms like a slow heartbeat or fainting, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Verampil at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F) in a light-resistant container.
