Ventolin is a selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. Its therapeutic doses interact with β2-adrenergic receptors in the muscles of the bronchi. After inhalation, 10-20% of the administered dose reaches the lower respiratory tract. The medication starts to act within 4-5 minutes after inhalation and lasts for 4-6 hours. Ventolin is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and to treat patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis.
Do not use the medication more frequently than recommended. The common initial dose for inhalation is 2.5 mg, which may later be increased up to 5 mg. The solution for inhalations must be protected from microbial contamination, which could spread to the patient's mucous membranes. Use proper aseptic techniques each time you open the bottle. Avoid any contact of the dropper tip with any surface. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.
If you notice that the medication does not help or your symptoms worsen, consult your doctor. The intake of other inhaled drugs and asthma medications should only be done under your doctor's recommendations. Inform your doctor about any history of allergic reactions, as well as conditions such as diabetes, heart or blood vessel disease, heart rhythm problems, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, or seizure disorders.
Ventolin should not be used if there is a history of hypersensitivity to the medication or its components.
The most common side effects include shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet, and trembling or shaking of the hands or feet. More rare side effects may include a fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and tremor or nervousness.
Ventolin should not be co-administered with other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators or used cautiously to avoid harmful cardiovascular effects. Simultaneous use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants is contraindicated. Their intake should be postponed until 2 weeks after finishing Ventolin treatment. Beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agents can cause severe bronchospasm in asthma patients and block the pulmonary effect of beta-agonists like Ventolin. Beta-agonists can worsen hypokalemia caused by non-potassium-sparing diuretics. Ventolin may also decrease serum levels of digoxin.
If you forget to take your dose, do so as soon as you remember. However, do not take it if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not increase your recommended dose. Take your doses at the same time each day to avoid missing a dose.
Symptoms of overdose may include transient changes such as tachycardia, tremor, and headache, caused by β2-adrenergic receptor agonists. Severe hypokalemia can also occur as a result of Ventolin overdose.
Store Ventolin at room temperature, away from moisture, sunlight, children, and pets, in a tightly sealed container.
