Velpanat is prescribed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C in adults. The combination of sofosbuvir (a nucleotide polymerase inhibitor) and velpatasvir (an NS5A inhibitor) works by blocking the virus's ability to replicate and spread in the body, leading to viral clearance when taken as directed.
Velpanat is taken once daily, with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole. The usual treatment duration is 12 weeks, but it may vary depending on hepatitis C genotype, liver condition, or prior therapy. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully.
Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver failure, hepatitis B infection, kidney disease, or if you take medications for heart rhythm issues. Patients co‑infected with HBV and HCV may be at risk of HBV reactivation. Do not stop treatment without consulting your doctor.
Velpanat is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, or any tablet components. It should not be used with certain medications that significantly reduce velpatasvir levels.
Common side effects include headache, fatigue, nausea, and insomnia. Less common but serious effects may include slow heartbeat (especially if taken with amiodarone), liver function changes, or allergic reactions. Seek medical attention for severe or unusual symptoms.
Velpanat may interact with antacids, proton pump inhibitors, rifampicin, St. John's Wort, certain anticonvulsants, and HIV medications. Some interactions may reduce effectiveness. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you take.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Overdose may cause severe headache, fatigue, nausea, or general discomfort. Seek medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected.
Store Velpanat at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep it in its original bottle and out of reach of children.
