Vasotec belongs to the class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It inhibits the formation of renin into angiotensin, a biologically active substance with vasoconstrictor and hypertensive effects. Vasotec is used for treating hypertension, congestive heart failure, diabetes-related kidney problems, and to improve survival after a heart attack.
Take Vasotec exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage depends on the severity of your arterial hypertension. In cases of hypertensive crisis, a Vasotec tablet may be taken under the tongue and allowed to dissolve.
Inform your doctor if you have allergies to medications, liver or kidney disorders, hyperpotassemia, dehydration, a history of stroke, blood vessel pathology, or diabetes. Avoid alcohol, as it may worsen dizziness. Be cautious when driving or engaging in physical activity.
Vasotec should not be used if you have hypersensitivity to ACE inhibitors, are pregnant, or are in infancy.
Vasotec is generally well tolerated, with side effects being minor and temporary. The most common side effect is a dry cough, which stops when the medication is discontinued. Other side effects may include:
Vasotec may enhance the effects of alcohol and slow the excretion of lithium ions. Its hypotensive effect may be reduced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and estrogens, and increased by diuretics, alcohol, general anesthetics, and other hypotensive medications. Potassium-sparing diuretics and potassium-containing medications increase the risk of hyperpotassemia. Other medications that may interact with Vasotec include bone marrow suppressants and immunosuppressants.
Do not take a double dose if you miss one. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Overdose symptoms include extreme dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
Store Vasotec tablets and capsules at room temperature, below 30°C (86°F), away from light and moisture.
