Urso is a bile acid used to prevent and treat gallstones. It dissolves the cholesterol that forms gallstones and reduces cholesterol production in the liver and absorption in the intestines. This helps decrease the formation of gallstones. Additionally, Urso can lower the levels of other bile acids that may harm the liver.
Take Urso as prescribed by your doctor. It should be taken with a meal or food. Avoid taking antacids containing aluminum or other bile acids within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking Urso.
Before taking Urso, consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Also, inform your doctor if you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, herbal products, or dietary supplements. Discuss any allergies to food, medications, or other substances. Exercise caution if you have conditions such as bile duct obstruction, gallbladder inflammation, pancreas inflammation, or bleeding from esophageal veins.
Do not take Urso if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Common side effects include:
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions, such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.
Inform your doctor about all medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal products, especially estrogens (e.g., Premarin, oral contraceptives), as they may reduce the effectiveness of Urso.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Symptoms of overdose may include diarrhea. Contact your doctor immediately if an overdose is suspected.
Store Urso at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not store in the bathroom.
