Oxcarbazepine is an antiepileptic drug used to treat seizure disorders (epilepsy). The exact mechanism of action of Oxcarbazepine and its active metabolite, 10-monohydroxy metabolite (MHD), is not fully understood. Oxcarbazepine works by blocking potential-dependent sodium channels, stabilizing overexcited neuronal membranes, inhibiting repetitive neuronal discharges, and reducing synaptic impulses. Its antiepileptic effects are also supported by increased potassium (K+) conductance and modulation of high-voltage-activated calcium (Ca2+) channels. While primarily used for epilepsy, Oxcarbazepine may also be prescribed in rare cases for the treatment of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive disorder).
Oxcarbazepine is available in tablet and oral suspension (liquid) forms. It is typically taken every 12 hours, with or without food. Consistent timing is important to maintain stable medication levels in the bloodstream. Before using the suspension, shake it thoroughly to ensure an even mixture. Do not abruptly stop taking Oxcarbazepine without consulting your doctor, as this may worsen seizures.
Inform your healthcare provider if you have a known allergy to oxcarbazepine, carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Epitol, Equetro, Tegretol), or any other medications. Disclose all medications and herbal products you are currently taking. Notify your doctor if you have or have had kidney or liver disease, are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Oxcarbazepine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, changes in mental health, or suicidal thoughts.
Caution is advised for patients with a history of hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or during pregnancy. The safety and efficacy of Oxcarbazepine in children under 2 years of age have not been established.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following severe symptoms:

If you miss a dose, consult your doctor for guidance on when to take the next dose.
In case of an overdose, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Symptoms may include a worsening of side effects.
Store Oxcarbazepine at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture. Do not use the medication after the expiration date.
