Tricor contains the active substance fenofibrate, which converts into the active metabolite fenofibric acid in the tissues. It is used alongside a diet to treat individuals with very high levels of triglycerides or lipid disorders. The drug boosts lipoprotein lipase activity, enhances triglyceride catabolism in very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), accelerates cholesterol transfer from VLDL to high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and reduces VLDL synthesis.
For high cholesterol levels or a combination of high cholesterol and high triglycerides, the initial dose is 160 mg of Tricor taken orally three times a day. For high triglyceride levels, the starting dose is 54-160 mg daily, adjustable every 4-8 weeks up to a maximum of 160 mg daily if triglycerides do not improve.
Regular monitoring of transaminase activity is essential for patients on Tricor. If ALT levels increase twofold or more alongside myalgia and muscle weakness, treatment should be stopped. Tricor treatment, combined with a hypolipidemic diet, should only be continued long-term under medical supervision. Tricor may cause gallstones.
Tricor should not be used by individuals hypersensitive to its components.
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, especially blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), cyclosporine, MAO inhibitors (e.g., selegiline, furazolidone), diabetic medications (e.g., glipizide, insulin), estrogens/birth control pills, statins (e.g., lovastatin, pravastatin), and high-dose niacin (1 gram or more daily). Combining Tricor with statins or high-dose niacin may cause muscle injury (myopathy).
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double the dose if it is almost time for the next one. Continue with your regular dosing schedule the next day.
Taking any drug in excess can be dangerous. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Tricor at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
