This anti-tuberculosis medication has a bacteriostatic effect, suppressing bacterial protein synthesis and inhibiting the growth and propagation of tuberculosis mycobacteria both intracellularly and extracellularly. It enhances phagocytosis at the site of tuberculosis inflammation, aiding in its resolution. Trecator-SC may also be used to treat leprosy (Hansen's disease).
The dosage of Trecator-SC depends on your medical condition, age, and weight, and should be determined by your doctor. It is typically taken with a full glass of water, with or without food. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Continue the treatment even if symptoms disappear, as the infection may not be fully eradicated. Only stop taking the medication under your doctor's guidance.
Before using Trecator-SC, inform your doctor about all medications and herbal products you are taking, any allergies you have, and whether you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Trecator-SC is contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment, hypersensitivity to the drug, or during pregnancy. Caution is advised when prescribing it to patients with diabetes or epilepsy.
Potential side effects include allergic reactions such as hives, rash, swelling of the tongue or face, as well as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas, jaundice, loss of appetite, stomatitis, peripheral neuritis, confusion, mental depression, clumsiness, unsteadiness, numbness, tingling, burning or pain in the hands and feet, menstrual cycle disturbances, and impotence. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, seek medical attention immediately.
Trecator-SC may interact with cycloserine and isoniazid. Its drowsiness effect can be intensified by sedatives, tranquilizers, sleep medications, narcotic pain relievers, psychiatric medications (e.g., chlorpromazine), certain antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), muscle relaxants, and anti-seizure medications, particularly in patients with a history of neurological or psychotic disorders. Co-administration with other anti-tuberculosis drugs may increase the risk of seizures.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Symptoms of overdose are not well-defined. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical assistance.
Store Trecator-SC at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
