Common Use

Toprol XL primarily works by blocking beta-adrenoreceptors in the heart. It is commonly used to treat hypertension, chest pain (angina), abnormal heart rhythms, and to manage and prevent myocardial infarction. This medication affects the autonomic nervous system, which regulates heart rate. By blocking these receptors, Toprol XL helps reduce abnormally rapid heart rhythms. It also decreases myocardial irritability, cardiac output, and produces other beneficial effects.

Dosage and Direction

Take Toprol XL with food or immediately after a meal. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet; swallow it whole with a glass of water. Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated, typically ranging from 100 to 450 mg daily. Your specific dosage should be determined by your physician. Elderly patients are often advised to start with a daily dose of 50 mg. While kidney failure does not require dosage adjustments, liver failure may necessitate the use of alternative beta-adrenoblockers that are not processed by the liver.

Precautions

Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Toprol XL, as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Always follow your doctor's instructions and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.

Drug Interactions

Be cautious when taking Toprol XL with calcium channel blockers or digoxin (Lanoxin), as these combinations can dangerously lower blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, Toprol XL may mask early signs of low blood sugar, so diabetic patients should use it with care.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is less than 4 hours away, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double up on doses to compensate for a missed one.

Overdose

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of an overdose, such as uneven heartbeats, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness, fainting, or bluish-colored fingernails.

Storage

Store Toprol XL at a temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep it in a tightly sealed, light-resistant container and protect it from moisture.
