Common Use

Tolterodine contains tolterodine tartrate, a substance in the cholinergic (acetylcholine) receptor blocker class. This medication helps reduce spasms in bladder muscles, treat overactive bladder, and manage symptoms like urge urinary incontinence and frequent urination.

Dosage and Direction

Tolterodine is taken twice daily. The recommended initial dose is 2mg twice per day. For long-acting Tolterodine, start with a 4mg daily dose. If not well tolerated, reduce to 2mg. Adjust dosage for patients with impaired liver or kidney function.

• Do not open, crush, or chew Tolterodine capsules.
• Swallow the tablet whole.

Precautions

Consult your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

• Glaucoma
• Kidney or liver disease
• Myasthenia gravis
• Personal or family history of "Long QT syndrome"

This medication may affect cognitive reactions or concentration. Use caution when driving or operating machinery.

Contraindications

Do not use Tolterodine if you have:

• Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
• Urinary retention (obstructed urine flow)
• Gastric retention (poor stomach emptying)
• Allergic reactions to the drug's components

Possible Side Effects

• Hives

Other potential side effects:

Drug Interactions

Notify your doctor if you take any of the following medications, as they may interfere with Tolterodine:

• Cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune)
• Clarithromycin (Biaxin), azithromycin (Zithromax), erythromycin, telithromycin (Ketek)
• Itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), miconazole (Monistat, Micatin)
• Heart rhythm medications like amiodarone (Cordarone), sotalol (Betapace), quinidine (Cardioquin)
• Psychiatric drugs such as haloperidol (Haldol) or thioridazine (Mellaril)

Missed Dose

Never double the dose. If a dose is missed, skip it and resume the regular schedule.

Overdose

Symptoms include blurred vision, dry mouth, and rapid heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if suspected.

Storage

Store at 15-30°C (59-86°F) away from moisture and heat.
