Timoptic is an ophthalmic solution used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It contains Timolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker, which works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor in the eye. This helps lower eye pressure and prevents further damage to the optic nerve. Timoptic is commonly prescribed to prevent vision loss associated with high eye pressure.
The usual recommended dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily. Depending on the patient's response, the doctor may adjust the dosage or reduce it to once daily.
To apply:
Before using Timoptic, inform your doctor if you have:
Use with caution in patients with diabetes, as Timolol may mask signs of low blood sugar. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider.
Timoptic should not be used by patients with:
It is not recommended for use in children unless specifically prescribed. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a physician.
Common side effects include:
Rare but serious effects include breathing difficulties, chest pain, or irregular heartbeat. If any severe or unusual symptoms occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention promptly.
Timoptic may interact with:
It may enhance the effects of drugs used to lower blood pressure or slow heart rate. Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including oral and topical drugs. Avoid using other eye drops concurrently unless instructed by your doctor.
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one. Regular use is important for effective pressure control.
An overdose of Timoptic may result in:
In case of accidental ingestion or excessive application, seek emergency medical help immediately. Systemic beta-blocker effects may occur if absorbed into the bloodstream. Prompt medical care is critical in overdose situations.
