Common Use

Symbicort is used to prevent and treat asthma in adults and children over six years old. It is also effective in managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including emphysema and bronchitis.

This medication is a slow-acting formula that works alongside fast-acting drugs to relieve symptoms of asthma and COPD. However, it is not a substitute for rescue inhalers or fast-acting asthma medications.

Symbicort works by reducing inflammation and widening the bronchioles, alleviating key symptoms of asthma and COPD.

Dosage and Direction

Symbicort is taken twice daily, with 12 hours between doses. Each dose involves two oral inhalations. Always follow your doctor's instructions for proper use.

To use Symbicort:

• Shake the inhaler well and check the mouthpiece for debris.
• Exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth, aiming it toward the back of your throat.
• Press down on the inhaler while inhaling deeply and slowly.
• Hold your breath for several seconds, then remove the inhaler and breathe normally.
• Repeat the process for the second dose.
• Rinse your mouth thoroughly after use.

How to Use Symbicort Turbuhaler 160/4.5 mcg/dose

Preparation for First Use:

1. Unscrew and remove the cover. A rattling sound is normal.
2. Hold the inhaler upright with the grip at the bottom. Do not touch the mouthpiece while turning the grip.
3. Turn the grip fully in one direction, then back in the other. Repeat this twice. You should hear a click.
4. The inhaler is now ready for use.

Steps for Each Inhalation:

1. Unscrew and remove the cover.
2. Turn the grip fully in one direction, then back in the other to load the dose.
3. Breathe out gently, then place the mouthpiece between your teeth and inhale deeply and forcefully.
4. Remove the inhaler and breathe out normally.
5. Repeat if more than one inhalation is prescribed.
6. Replace the cover tightly and rinse your mouth with water (do not swallow).

Cleaning Tip: Wipe the mouthpiece weekly with a dry tissue. Avoid using water or liquids.

Precautions

Symbicort is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks. If an attack occurs, use your fast-acting medication instead. If symptoms persist, seek emergency help.

If Symbicort enters your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Contact your doctor if irritation continues.

Contraindications

Symbicort is not a primary treatment for asthma or COPD and should be used alongside other therapies. It is contraindicated for patients allergic to budesonide or formoterol.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include flu-like symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, headaches, and chest tightness.

Less common side effects may include:

• Urinary issues like frequent urination or pain.
• Cough, hoarseness, or dry throat.
• Stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.
• Increased pulse or joint pain.
• Swelling, voice changes, or trouble swallowing.

Rare but serious side effects include:

• Blurred vision, confusion, or seizures.
• Fruit-like breath odor or severe headaches.
• Irregular heartbeat or chest pain.

Drug Interactions

Symbicort should not be combined with other anti-inflammatory drugs, bronchodilators, or expectorants. It may also interfere with medications that affect blood glucose or stomach acid levels.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next scheduled dose. Do not double up.

Overdose

In case of overdose, contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms may include severe shortness of breath, erratic pulse, or disorientation. Seek emergency help if necessary.

Storage

Store Symbicort upright in a dry place at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). If unused for seven days or more, prime the inhaler by shaking it for five seconds and releasing a test spray.
