Suprax is a cephalosporin antibiotic known for its bactericidal properties, making it effective in treating various infectious diseases. These include pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, acute and chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, moderate otitis, non-severe urogenital tract infections, gonococcal infections of the urethra and cervix, and gonorrhea. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic active against numerous aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Suprax is resistant to beta-lactamases and particularly effective against Streptococcus species like S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, and S. agalactiae. It also targets Haemophilus species such as H. influenzae and H. parainfluenzae, as well as Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Pasteurella sp., Providencia, Salmonella, and others.
Suprax can be taken with or without food, accompanied by a large glass of water. When prescribed multiple doses daily, ensure equal intervals between intakes. Taking it with food can prevent stomach upset but may slow absorption. If using a suspension, shake it well before use and measure with a special spoon. Do not use this medication unless prescribed, and avoid sharing it with others who have similar symptoms. Your dosage should be determined by your physician based on your condition, age, weight, and other factors.
Before taking Suprax, inform your doctor if you have had allergic reactions to penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics, or if you have a history of stomach or intestinal diseases like colitis. Patients with kidney disorders may require dosage adjustments. Avoid repeated use of this medication, as it may lead to secondary infections.
Suprax is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to the drug or penicillins, in babies younger than 6 months, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. Caution is advised for adult patients, particularly those with kidney failure or a history of colitis.
Severe allergic reactions such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the mouth or face may occur. If you experience symptoms like bloody stools, decreased urination, fever, red or peeling skin, seizures, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, vaginal itching, white spots in the mouth, or jaundice, seek immediate medical attention.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. For once-daily dosing, take the missed dose and the next one after 10-12 hours. For twice or thrice-daily dosing, take the missed dose and the next one after 5-6 or 2-4 hours, respectively. Never double the dose.
If you experience persistent allergic reactions, blood in the urine, diarrhea, nausea, upper abdominal pain, or vomiting, seek medical attention immediately.
Store Suprax at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use it after the expiration date. Prepared suspension should be refrigerated for up to 14 days; do not freeze it and discard it after this period.
