Sumycin is an antibiotic from the tetracycline class that works by preventing bacterial protein synthesis. It is used to treat various infections, including pulmonary infections (e.g., Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae), urinary tract infections, acne, chlamydia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, chancroid, cholera, brucellosis, anthrax, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
Take Sumycin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water on an empty stomach, at least two hours before or after a meal. Avoid consuming dairy products with this medication. If using the suspension, shake it well before use and measure the dose with a special spoon. Continue the treatment even if symptoms disappear, as the infection may still be present.
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, as this medication may increase skin sensitivity. Tetracyclines, including Sumycin, can bind with calcium in developing bones and teeth, potentially causing permanent discoloration of teeth in children.
Side effects may include allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately if you experience severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision, fever, body aches, severe blistering, peeling or red skin rash, decreased urination, jaundice, confusion, weakness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, easy bruising, or unusual bleeding.
Sumycin may reduce the effectiveness of certain birth control pills. Avoid taking iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within two hours of Sumycin. The dosage of indirect anticoagulants may need adjustment due to suppressed intestinal microflora. Sumycin may also diminish the effects of bactericidal antibiotics like penicillins and cephalosporins.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Seek medical attention immediately in case of severe allergic reactions, persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Store Sumycin at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
