Sporanox is an azole antifungal medication used to treat serious fungal infections such as blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and aspergillosis. It works by killing sensitive fungi through interference with the fungal cell membrane formation. Sporanox is also prescribed for onychomycosis, which affects the toenails and fingernails.
Take Sporanox orally with or without food or milk. For optimal results, take it at the same time each day. Dosage varies depending on the type of infection:

Sporanox may negatively affect the heart and should not be used for fungal nail infections if you have a history of cardiac issues like congestive heart failure. Inform your doctor if you have conditions such as heart rhythm disorders, kidney or liver disease, breathing disorders, cystic fibrosis, or Long QT syndrome. Avoid antacids within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking Sporanox. Do not use Sporanox during pregnancy, while planning pregnancy, or while breastfeeding without medical advice.
Sporanox is contraindicated for individuals hypersensitive to itraconazole or similar medications like fluconazole or ketoconazole, or those with a history of congestive heart failure.
Side effects may include allergic reactions (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), fever, shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain, hearing problems, numbness, pain during urination, nausea, stomach pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice. Less serious side effects include diarrhea, constipation, mild stomach pain, itching, skin rash, headache, dizziness, or cold symptoms. Discontinue use and consult your doctor if any unusual symptoms occur.
Sporanox may interact with drugs such as cisapride, dihydroergotamine, dofetilide, ergonovine, ergotamine, lovastatin, methylergonovine, midazolam, nisoldipine, pimozide, quinidine, simvastatin, or triazolam. Drug interactions do not always require discontinuing medication but should be managed under medical supervision.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day.
Symptoms of Sporanox overdose are not well-documented. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms.
Store Sporanox at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
