Spiriva is a long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist. It works by reversibly blocking M3 receptors in the respiratory tract, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscles in the bronchial tree. Due to its high receptor affinity and slow release from the M3 receptor complex, Spiriva provides prolonged local action. Its bronchodilatory effect is dose-dependent and lasts for at least 24 hours. This medication is used to treat bronchial spasms (wheezing) associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.
Spiriva is available as capsules containing powder for inhalation, used with the HandiHaler device. It should be taken at the same time each day for optimal results.
Concurrent use of Spiriva with other anticholinergic medications is not recommended.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose. Take your medication at the same time daily to avoid missing a dose.
No cases of overdose have been reported when Spiriva is used at therapeutic doses. Excessive doses may lead to anticholinergic effects such as changes in accommodation and dry mouth. Acute poisoning is unlikely due to the low bioavailability of the inhaled medication.
Store Spiriva at room temperature, away from moisture, sunlight, children, and pets. Keep it in a tightly sealed container.
