Skelaxin is used alongside rest, physical therapy, and other treatments to relieve discomfort from acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. Its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood but may be linked to its sedative effects. Note that metaxalone does not directly relax tense skeletal muscles in humans.
The recommended dosage for adults and children over 12 years old is one 800 mg tablet three to four times daily.
Do not use Skelaxin if you are allergic to metaxalone or if you have:
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nervousness or irritability, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal upset. Rare but serious side effects may include hypersensitivity reactions, rash (with or without itching), leukopenia, hemolytic anemia, and jaundice.
The sedative effects of Skelaxin may be enhanced when combined with other CNS depressants such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids, or tricyclic antidepressants. Caution is advised when taking multiple CNS depressants simultaneously.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember within 1 hour. If more than 1 hour has passed, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Deliberate or accidental overdoses of metaxalone, especially when combined with antidepressants or alcohol, have been fatal. If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Store Skelaxin at room temperature (59-86°F or 15-30°C), away from light and moisture. Avoid storing in the bathroom and keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.
