Common Use

Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication used to treat high cholesterol levels in the blood. It works by blocking the production of cholesterol in the body, helping to prevent conditions like:

• Heart attack
• Heart disease
• Hardening of the arteries
• Stroke
• Vascular disease

This medication can also reduce risks for people with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or a history of stroke. For best results, use Simvastatin alongside a low-fat diet.

Dosage and Direction

Take Simvastatin orally with or without food or milk.

Adult dosage:

• Recommended starting dose: 20-40 mg once daily in the evening
• Dosage may be adjusted every 4 weeks

Children's dosage (10-17 years):

• Recommended starting dose: 10 mg once daily in the evening
• Dosage may be adjusted every 4 weeks
• Maximum daily dose: 40 mg
• Girls must have menstruated for at least 12 months before starting therapy

Children under 10 years should only use Simvastatin with doctor approval. Always consult your doctor before using this medication for proper dosage instructions.

Precautions

Consult your doctor before taking Simvastatin if you have:

• History of alcoholism
• Liver disease
• Severe infection
• Kidney disease
• Low thyroid function
• Heart disease
• Allergies

Limit alcohol intake as it may increase side effects. Simvastatin may increase risk for liver problems. During treatment, limit grapefruit or grapefruit juice consumption (less than 1 quart daily) to avoid serious side effects.

Women should not use Simvastatin during pregnancy, when trying to conceive, or while breastfeeding without doctor approval.

Contraindications

Simvastatin is not allowed for:

• Patients with active liver disease
• Unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases
• Hypersensitivity to any medication component
• Pregnant or nursing women

Possible allergic reactions and side effects include:

Serious side effects:

• Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness with fever or flu symptoms
• Dark colored urine

Less serious side effects:

• Mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, heartburn
• Nausea
• Constipation
• Diarrhea

Discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects or any unusual reactions.

Drug Interactions

Simvastatin may interact with:

• Danazol
• Gemfibrozil (Lopid), clofibrate, or fenofibrate
• Niacin
• Nefazodone
• Cholestyramine or colestipol
• Warfarin
• Amiodarone, diltiazem, or verapamil
• Erythromycin, clarithromycin, or telithromycin
• Antifungals (itraconazole, fluconazole, ketoconazole)
• Immune-weakening drugs (cancer medicine, steroids, cyclosporine)
• HIV/AIDS medications

Drug interactions don't always require stopping medication but may affect effectiveness. Consult your doctor about managing interactions.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Never double doses. Resume regular schedule the next day.

Overdose

Simvastatin overdose is typically not life-threatening. Symptoms may include:

• Muscle pain (myalgia)
• Red urine (in severe cases)

If overdose occurs, contact your doctor immediately.

Storage

• Store at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C)
• Keep away from light and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children and pets
• Do not use after expiration date
