Common Use

Rulide is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate upper respiratory tract infections, such as acute pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and sinusitis, caused by susceptible pathogens. It works by preventing bacterial growth through the inhibition of protein synthesis.

Dosage and Directions

Rulide is typically taken once or twice daily, with a standard adult dose of 300 mg per day. The usual treatment course lasts between 7 to 10 days.

Precautions

• In patients with hepatic failure, the half-life of Rulide in serum may increase. Severe liver disorders, such as hepatic cirrhosis with jaundice or ascites, may require dose adjustments.
• Small amounts of Rulide are excreted in breast milk. If necessary, breastfeeding or maternal treatment should be discontinued.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to Rulide or other macrolide antibiotics.
• Concomitant use with vasoconstrictive ergotamine-type medications.

Possible Side Effects

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric pain, flatulence.
• Headache, dizziness, malaise.
• Hives, rash, swelling of the tongue and face.
• Moniliasis (candidiasis).

Drug Interactions

• Rulide may increase plasma levels of theophylline when taken together.
• It may also affect the activity of warfarin and erythromycin.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

If serious and persistent allergic symptoms occur, such as hives, swelling of the face or tongue, or rash, seek medical attention immediately. Generally, Rulide is well tolerated.

Storage

Store Rulide at room temperature, between 59-77°F (15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use the medication after the expiration date.
