Common Use

Revia is a medication used to prevent addiction to certain drugs. It is prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment program for drug abuse. It is important to note that Revia should not be used if you are currently taking opiates, including methadone. The active ingredient in Revia, Naltrexone, is an opiate antagonist. It works in the brain by blocking the effects of opiates and reducing the desire to use them. Additionally, Revia is also used in the treatment of alcohol abuse.

Dosage and Directions

Take Revia orally at a dose of 50 mg once a day, with or without food, or as directed by your doctor. If prescribed as part of a supervised program, your doctor may increase the dose to 100-150 mg, to be taken every 2-3 days. Ensure that you have not used any opiates for at least 7 days before starting Revia.

Precautions

• Inform your doctor if you have any allergies, including to Revia.
• Consult your doctor if you have taken opioid drugs within the last 7-10 days, have current opioid dependence, or suffer from active liver disease or liver failure.
• Discuss your medical history with your doctor, particularly if you have kidney disease or liver problems.
• Use Revia during pregnancy only if clearly needed, after discussing the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Contraindications

Revia is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to the drug, acute hepatitis, or liver failure. Ensure you are completely narcotic-free before starting Revia.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, headache, anxiety, tiredness, and trouble sleeping. Some individuals may experience mild opiate withdrawal symptoms, such as abdominal cramps, muscle aches, bone or joint pain, restlessness, or a runny nose. If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly.

Serious side effects are rare but may include severe allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking, especially diarrhea medications, cough medications, thioridazine, and disulfiram. Note that Revia may cause false test results. Inform laboratory personnel and all treating doctors that you are taking Revia.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose

In case of a suspected overdose, contact your local poison control center or seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Revia at room temperature (77°F or 25°C), away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C) is acceptable. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets, and avoid storing it in the bathroom.
