Reglan is an anti-vomiting medication that prevents vomiting, hiccups, and stimulates and coordinates the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract. It increases acetylcholine release from neurons and enhances cholinergic receptor sensitivity to acetylcholine. Additionally, Reglan acts as a serotonin receptor blocker. It raises the lower esophageal sphincter tone, stimulates smooth gastric muscle contractions, and relaxes the pylorus and duodenum. By interacting with dopamine receptors in the brain, it is effective in treating nausea. This medication is used to manage conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diabetic gastroparesis, atonia and hypotonia of the stomach and intestines, biliary dyskinesia, flatulence, and complex therapy for gastric and duodenal ulcers during exacerbation. It also accelerates peristaltic activity during gastrointestinal radiocontrast studies.
The usual dose of Reglan for adults is 5-10 mg taken 3-4 times daily before meals with a glass of water. For patients experiencing severe nausea or vomiting, 10 mg of Reglan is administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously. Liquid medication should be measured using a special dose-measuring spoon. The oral concentrate form must be mixed with water, fruit juice, soda, or soft food. Take Reglan exactly as prescribed and avoid using it for more than three months.
Do not take Reglan if you are allergic to it or have conditions such as bleeding or blockage in the stomach or intestines, epilepsy or other seizure disorders, or an adrenal gland tumor. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, or a history of depression. Avoid consuming alcohol during treatment.
Reglan is contraindicated in cases of gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical intestinal obstruction, perforation of the stomach or intestines, pheochromocytoma, extrapyramidal disorders, epilepsy, prolactin-dependent tumors, glaucoma, pregnancy, breastfeeding, concomitant use of anticholinergic drugs, and hypersensitivity to Reglan.
Common side effects of Reglan include drowsiness, restlessness, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and sedation. More severe side effects may involve tremors, rigidity, restless muscle movements in the eyes, slow movements of the tongue, jaw, or neck, a mask-like facial appearance (similar to Parkinson's disease), fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, depressed mood, hallucinations, jaundice, swelling, and tardive dyskinesia. Involuntary movements of the arms and legs may occur in children and adults over 30. If any of these symptoms arise, discontinue Reglan and seek immediate medical attention.
Narcotic pain medications, sleeping pills, and anti-anxiety drugs can increase the drowsiness caused by Reglan.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Skip the missed dose if it is close to the next one. Do not take an extra dose to compensate.
If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, tremors, uncontrolled muscle movements in the face or neck, or seizures.
Store Reglan in a dry place away from sunlight at room temperature, ideally between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
