Common Use

Raloxifene is a medication used to prevent and treat bone thinning (osteoporosis) in post-menopausal women. It helps stop bone loss after menopause and reduces the risk of invasive breast cancer by blocking estrogen in breast and uterine tissue. This drug is also prescribed to lower the risk of invasive breast cancer in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis or those at high risk of the disease.

Dosage and Direction

Take Raloxifene orally once daily, with or without food or milk.

• The typical adult dose is 60 mg per day.
• For optimal results, combine with calcium and/or vitamin D supplements.

Precautions

• Avoid sitting still for long periods, especially during travel.
• Stop taking Raloxifene at least 3 days before surgery or bed rest.

Contraindications

Possible Side Effects

Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention):

• Sudden numbness, weakness, or severe headache
• Vision, speech, or balance problems
• Chest pain, rapid breathing, or fast heart rate
• Leg pain or swelling
• Unusual vaginal bleeding or breast changes
• Severe lower back pain

Less serious side effects:

• Hot flashes, dizziness
• Joint or leg pain
• Mild nausea or stomach discomfort
• Runny or stuffy nose

Drug Interactions

Raloxifene may interact with:

Missed Dose

• Take a missed dose as soon as remembered.
