Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It is commonly prescribed for conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and peptic ulcers. It helps relieve symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach pain, and promotes healing of the esophagus and stomach lining.
Rabeprazole is usually taken once daily, preferably before a meal. Tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed. Dosage depends on the condition being treated and should be followed exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, low magnesium levels, or osteoporosis. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, or gut infections. It is generally not recommended for use beyond the prescribed duration unless under medical supervision.
Do not use rabeprazole if you are allergic to it or to other PPIs such as omeprazole or pantoprazole. It is not recommended for use in children unless prescribed. Avoid use in patients with severe liver impairment unless closely monitored.
Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and flatulence. Serious but rare effects include allergic reactions, low magnesium levels, and Clostridium difficile infection. Long-term use may affect nutrient absorption and increase the risk of kidney issues.
Rabeprazole may interact with drugs that require stomach acid for absorption, such as ketoconazole or atazanavir. It may also affect drugs like warfarin or digoxin. Always inform your doctor about all medications, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to catch up.
An overdose of rabeprazole is rare but may cause confusion, drowsiness, headache, or fast heartbeat. Seek medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected. Treatment is supportive and based on symptoms.
Store rabeprazole at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep tablets in their original blister packaging until use. Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiration date.
