Common Use

Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker that works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels. It is commonly prescribed to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain).

Dosage and Direction

Your doctor may adjust your dosage to ensure optimal results. Take Adalat CC tablets on an empty stomach. Do not crush, chew, or break the extended-release tablet; swallow it whole. Breaking the pill may cause an excessive release of the medication at once.

Precautions

Consult your doctor about consuming grapefruit products while on this medication. To avoid dizziness, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment.

Contraindications

Do not use nifedipine if you are allergic to it. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

• Kidney or liver disease (especially cirrhosis)
• Coronary artery disease
• Congestive heart failure
• Digestive problems

Possible Side Effects

Less serious side effects may include:

• Headache or dizziness
• Drowsiness or tiredness
• Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or stomach pain
• Sleep problems (insomnia)
• Mild rash or itching
• Joint pain or leg cramps
• Warmth, redness, or tingling under the skin
• Increased urination

Drug Interaction

Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start any new medication without consulting your doctor first.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Symptoms may include severe dizziness, pounding heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, and fainting.

Storage

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
