Common Use

Proair Inhaler is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It works by interacting with beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial muscles. After inhalation, 10-20% of the dose reaches the lower respiratory tract. The medication begins to take effect within 4-5 minutes and lasts for 4-6 hours. Proair Inhaler is used to relieve asthma symptoms and treat chronic obstructive bronchitis.

Dosage and Direction

Do not use the medication more frequently than recommended. The typical initial dose for inhalation is 2.5 mg, which may be increased to 5 mg if necessary. The inhalation solution must be protected from microbial contamination to prevent spreading to the patient's mucous membranes. Always use proper aseptic techniques when opening the bottle, and avoid contact between the dropper tip and any surface. Do not use the solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.

Precautions

Consult your doctor if the medication is ineffective or if your symptoms worsen. Use other inhaled drugs and asthma medications only as directed by your doctor. Inform your doctor about any history of allergies, diabetes, heart or blood vessel disease, heart rhythm problems, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, or seizure disorders.

Contraindications

Avoid using Proair Inhaler if you have a history of hypersensitivity to the medication or its components.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include shakiness or trembling in the legs, arms, hands, or feet. Rare side effects may include rapid or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, palpitations, and nervousness.

Drug Interactions

• Do not co-administer with other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators.
• Avoid using with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants. Wait 2 weeks after finishing Proair Inhaler treatment before using these medications.
• Beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agents may cause severe bronchospasm in asthma patients and block the effects of beta-agonists like Proair Inhaler.
• Nonpotassium-sparing diuretics may worsen hypokalemia when used with Proair Inhaler.
• Proair Inhaler may decrease serum levels of digoxin.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, skip it if it's almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose. Take your doses at the same time each day to avoid missing any.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include tachycardia, tremor, headache, and severe hypokalemia.

Storage

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture, sunlight, children, and pets, in a tightly sealed container.
