Common Use

Ponstel is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve moderate pain, particularly pain caused by menstrual periods in women.

Dosage and Direction

Take Ponstel with food, an antacid, or a full glass of water if it upsets your stomach.

Precautions

Ulcers or internal bleeding can occur without warning while using this medication. Regular check-ups with your doctor are recommended. Inform your doctor if you have a history of:

• Heart attack
• Angina (chest pain)
• Liver disease
• Kidney disease
• Psychiatric illness
• Circulation problems in the fingers during cold weather

Contraindications

Ponstel should not be used in patients with:

• Known hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid
• Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
• Asthma
• Urticaria
• Active ulceration or chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract

Possible Side Effects

The main side effect of Ponstel is drowsiness. Other possible side effects include:

• Stomach cramps
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Indigestion
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Lightheadedness
• Insomnia
• Nasal congestion

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor as you may need to stop taking this medication.

Drug Interactions

Ponstel interacts with:

• Aspirin
• Methotrexate
• ACE inhibitors
• Reduces effects of furosemide
• Antacids
• Increases plasma levels of Lithium

Additive effects of Ponstel and warfarin have also been reported.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention and drink a glass of milk. Symptoms of overdose may include:

• Lethargy
• Drowsiness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Epigastric pain

Rare symptoms may include increased blood pressure, acute renal failure, difficulty breathing, and coma.

Storage

Store Ponstel in a dry, tight container away from sunlight at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F). Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
