Plavix specifically and actively inhibits platelet aggregation (clotting) and dilates coronary vessels. It is used to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes caused by blood clots, particularly in patients with a recent history of stroke, heart attack, or peripheral vascular disease. Additionally, Plavix helps prevent ischemic disorders such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and thrombosis of peripheral arteries.
Plavix should be taken once daily, with or without food.
Since Plavix is a blood thinner, avoid taking it with aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) unless recommended by your doctor. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience black or bloody stools, vomit resembling coffee grounds, or cough up blood.
Exercise caution in patients with moderate liver or kidney failure.
Combining Plavix with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may increase the risk of stomach and intestinal bleeding. Additionally, high concentrations of Plavix can increase the concentration of Coumadin when used together, leading to excessive bleeding.
Never take a double dose of Plavix. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Symptoms of an overdose may include vomiting, exhaustion, shortness of breath, blood in stools or vomit, diarrhea, rash, or itching. In case of severe symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Store Plavix tablets and capsules at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
