Common Use

Phenergan is an antihistamine used to treat various allergy symptoms, including itching, runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, hives, and itchy skin rashes. It works by reducing the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases in response to certain irritants. Phenergan is also used as a sedative and sleep aid for all types of patients, to prevent or control nausea and vomiting, and to treat motion sickness. It can be used with other medications, including for post-surgery pain relief.

Dosage and Direction

Take Phenergan orally with or without food or milk. To avoid stomach upset, it is best taken with food. For allergy treatment, the recommended dose is 25 mg before sleeping. If necessary, the dose can be repeated within two hours. For motion sickness, the recommended dose is 25 mg twice daily. Note: This information is for review purposes only. Precautions

• Do not give this drug to patients in a coma.
• Avoid alcohol while taking Phenergan, as it can cause extreme drowsiness.

• Do not use Phenergan during pregnancy, while trying to become pregnant, or while breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.

Contraindications

• Phenergan is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
• It is contraindicated in comatose states and for individuals known to be hypersensitive or to have had an idiosyncratic reaction to promethazine or other phenothiazines.
• This drug should not be used to treat lower respiratory tract symptoms, including asthma.

Possible Side Effects

Serious side effects may include an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), twitching or uncontrollable movements, tremor, drooling, trouble swallowing, restlessness, high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, rapid heartbeats, fainting, seizures, pale skin, jaundice, and slow breathing. Less serious side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, stuffy nose, ringing in the ears, weight gain, swelling, impotence, and constipation. If you experience any of these, stop using Phenergan and consult your doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

Phenergan may interact with medications such as lithium, atropine, blood pressure medications, blood thinners, bronchodilators, bladder or urinary medications, MAO inhibitors, and medications for Parkinson's disease, restless leg syndrome, or stomach ulcers. Interactions may affect the effectiveness of the drugs. Always consult your doctor to manage these interactions.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day.

Overdose

Symptoms of Phenergan overdose may include severe drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, large pupils, flushing, nausea, vomiting, shallow breathing, and fainting. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

Storage

Store Phenergan at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
