Parlodel is a medication that stimulates the central and peripheral D2-dopamine receptors, derived from ergot alkaloids. It inhibits prolactin secretion, suppresses physiological lactation, normalizes menstrual cycles, reduces excessive growth hormone production, and helps balance progesterone and estrogen levels, reducing breast cysts. High doses of Parlodel activate dopamine receptors in the brain, including the striatum, substantia nigra, hypothalamus, and mesolimbic system. It is prescribed for treating infertility, abnormal menstruation, acromegaly (growth hormone overproduction), Parkinson's disease, and pituitary gland tumors.
Take Parlodel while lying down and avoid standing up quickly after use. Do not discontinue the medication even if symptoms persist or no immediate results are observed. This drug often requires long-term use for its effects to become evident.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe worsening headaches, seizures, stroke, or heart attack symptoms after taking Parlodel. Inform your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication or if you have a history of liver or kidney disease, hypertension, circulation issues, or heart attack. Exercise caution if you have mental health conditions, heart or circulatory diseases, peptic ulcers, or gastrointestinal bleeding. Parlodel may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.
Parlodel is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, gestosis, postpartum hypertension, essential tremor, familial tremor, Huntington's disease, cardiovascular diseases, endogenous psychosis, hypertension, hypotension, liver failure, and gastrointestinal ulcers. Use cautiously in patients with Parkinson's disease (especially with dementia), during pregnancy, or when undergoing treatment for hypertension.
While Parlodel is generally well-tolerated, consult your doctor immediately if you experience abdominal cramps, confusion, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, low blood pressure, drowsiness, dry mouth, nasal discharge, hallucinations (especially in Parkinson's patients), headaches, insomnia, indigestion, light-headedness, loss of coordination, or nausea.
Alcohol may worsen Parlodel's side effects, such as tachycardia, chest pain, and nausea. Inform your doctor if you are taking blood pressure medications (e.g., Aldomet, Catapres), Metoclopramide (Reglan), oral contraceptives, or other ergot derivatives (e.g., Hydergine, Pimozide). Parlodel may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, but skip it if it is more than 4 hours past the scheduled time. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.
Seek immediate medical help if you suspect an overdose. Drink a glass of milk to help mitigate the effects. Symptoms of overdose may include pale skin, excessive sweating, and repetitive yawning.
Store Parlodel in a dry, airtight container at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F), away from sunlight, children, and pets.
