Oxytrol contains oxybutynin and is used to treat bladder spasms and overactive bladder, which includes symptoms like frequent or urgent urination, increased nighttime urination, and urine leakage. Oxytrol works by blocking acetylcholine, which binds to receptors in bladder muscles, preventing their contraction.
Take 5 mg immediate-release tablets of Oxytrol 2-4 times daily. For elderly patients, the starting dose is 2.5 mg. Extended-release tablets should be taken once daily. Oxytrol tablets can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
This medication may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, which can impair your ability to concentrate. Exercise caution while driving or engaging in hazardous activities that require alertness and clear vision. Avoid consuming alcohol, as it can worsen side effects. Stay hydrated and avoid overheating, especially in hot weather or during exercise. Inform your doctor if you have conditions such as glaucoma, kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis, an enlarged prostate, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, slow digestion, or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Oxytrol is not suitable for patients with hypersensitivity to oxybutynin, uncontrolled glaucoma, blockages in the stomach or intestines, or anuria (absence of urination).
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications: atropine (Donnatal), dicyclomine (Bentyl), belladonna, clidinium (Quarzan), mepenzolate (Cantil), glycopyrrolate (Robinul), methscopolamine (Pamine), hyoscyamine (Levsin, Anaspaz, Cystospaz), propantheline (Pro-Banthine), methantheline (Provocholine), scopolamine (Transderm-Scop), clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin, itraconazole (Sporanox), or ketoconazole (Nizoral).
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take double doses or extra doses.
Symptoms of overdose may include tingly feelings, uneven heart rate, restlessness, fever, vomiting, reduced urination, or anuria.
Store Oxytrol at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F). Keep it away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. Avoid storing it in the bathroom or in places accessible to children.
