Orap (pimozide) is prescribed to treat severe motor and vocal tics in patients with Tourette's disorder when other treatments have not been effective. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, helping to reduce involuntary movements and vocalizations.
Orap is taken orally, usually once daily or as prescribed. The medication can be taken with or without food and should be taken with water. Any dose adjustments must be made only by a healthcare provider because Orap is closely monitored for its effects on the heart and nervous system.
Before taking Orap, inform your doctor if you have heart problems, a family history of sudden cardiac death, electrolyte imbalances, liver disease, or a history of seizures. Regular electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring may be required. Avoid alcohol and use caution when performing activities that require alertness. Do not stop the medication abruptly without medical advice.
Do not use Orap if you are allergic to pimozide or similar medications. It is contraindicated in patients with known QT prolongation, arrhythmias, severe electrolyte imbalances, or those taking certain medications that affect heart rhythm. It should not be used together with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, or restlessness. Serious side effects may include heart rhythm abnormalities, uncontrolled muscle movements, severe stiffness, tremors, or signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Seek immediate medical attention if severe symptoms occur.
Orap interacts with many medications, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, antibiotics, antifungals, antiarrhythmics, and drugs that affect electrolyte balance. Grapefruit products may also interact. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Skip the missed dose if needed - do not double the dose.
Overdose symptoms may include severe drowsiness, confusion, tremors, seizures, or dangerous heart rhythm changes. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.
