This medication is part of the calcium channel blockers group. Norvasc specifically blocks L-type channels, which are found in vascular walls, the myocardium, and particularly in the cells of the heart's conducting and contractile systems. By inhibiting the transfer of Ca+ ions through the membrane, Norvasc reduces vascular tone and arterial pressure. It is commonly prescribed to treat hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and angina.
Only take this medication if prescribed by your doctor. Always follow your doctor's instructions. Norvasc can be taken with or without food. Since it is metabolized in the liver, it should be used cautiously in patients with liver failure.
Avoid alcohol while taking Norvasc. Inform your doctor if you have congestive heart failure or liver disease before starting this medication.
Norvasc is contraindicated in cases of individual hypersensitivity, arterial hypotension, cardiogenic shock, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Caution is advised when administering Norvasc to patients with chronic heart failure, diabetes, lipid metabolism disorders, liver failure, and individuals under 18 years of age.
The most common side effects include edema of the lower extremities and headaches. Seek medical attention if you experience swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, numbness, burning, pain, tingling sensations, or jaundice.
Medications containing calcium may reduce the effectiveness of Norvasc. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and estrogens might also decrease its efficacy. Diuretics can enhance Norvasc's activity. Concurrent use with lithium-containing medications may increase lithium toxicity.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take an extra dose to compensate for the missed one.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience symptoms such as tingling sensations, severe dizziness, or fainting.
Store Norvasc at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F), in a light-resistant container away from moisture.
