Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that targets the parietal cells in the stomach lining. It is a variant of Prilosec (Omeprazole). Nexium accumulates and is activated in the secretory tubules, where it reduces hydrochloric acid production. It is commonly prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, erosive esophagitis, and H. pylori infections in combination with antibiotics. It is also used to prevent ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
For GERD, the typical dosage is 20 or 40 mg of Nexium once daily for 4-8 weeks. For H. pylori infections, 40 mg is taken once daily alongside amoxicillin and clarithromycin for 10 days. Take the capsules whole, one hour before a meal, and do not chew or crush them.
Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease before taking Nexium. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully when using Nexium with antibiotics for optimal results. Do not stop taking the medication even if symptoms improve, as the condition may not be fully treated. Consult your physician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Nexium is contraindicated in children under 12, individuals with hypersensitivity to Nexium or other benzimidazole medications like mebendazole (Vermox) and albendazole (Albenza), and patients taking atazanavir.
Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, or dry mouth. Allergic reactions such as hives, facial swelling, or rash may also occur. Contact your doctor if you suspect an overdose.
Nexium can increase blood levels of diazepam (Valium) by reducing its liver elimination. It may also reduce the absorption of ketoconazole (Nizoral) while increasing the absorption of digoxin (Lanoxin). When taken with clarithromycin, Nexium increases the AUC of the latter. It may slow the metabolism of medications like citalopram, diazepam, clomipramine, phenytoin, and imipramine, requiring dose adjustments.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose symptoms may include confusion, headache, drowsiness, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, nausea, dry mouth, sweating, flushing, shallow breathing, tremors, coordination issues, or seizures. Seek immediate medical help if an overdose is suspected.
Store Nexium at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
