Common Use

Namenda contains memantine hydrochloride and is used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Unlike other Alzheimer's medications, Namenda works by regulating glutamate levels in the brain. Glutamate plays a key role in learning and memory processes by activating certain brain chemicals.

Normally, glutamate binds to NMDA receptors on nerve cells. Namenda blocks these receptors, protecting nerve cells from excessive glutamate stimulation.

Dosage and Directions

The recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily. Your doctor may gradually increase your dosage following this schedule:

• 5 mg twice daily
• 5 mg and 10 mg as separate daily doses
• 10 mg twice daily

Take Namenda with or without food, accompanied by a full glass of water.

Precautions

Before taking Namenda, inform your doctor if you have:

• Cataracts
• Seizure disorders
• Liver or kidney problems
• Bladder or kidney infections

This medication may affect concentration. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Discuss pregnancy plans, current pregnancy, or breastfeeding with your doctor.

Contraindications

Namenda should not be used by patients with hypersensitivity to its components.

Possible Side Effects

Namenda may cause these side effects:

• Cough and chest tightness
• Increased blood pressure
• Vision changes and headaches
• Fatigue, dizziness, and pain
• Vomiting and constipation
• Back pain and rapid heartbeat
• Confusion and hallucinations
• Drowsiness and coordination issues
• Breathing difficulties
• Decreased urination
• Unusual bruising or bleeding

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor about all medications you take, especially:

• Cimetidine (Tagamet)
• Nicotine products
• Sodium bicarbonate
• Ranitidine (Zantac)
• Quinidine products
• Diuretics
• Antiviral medications (rimantadine, amantadine)
• Glaucoma medications
• Dextromethorphan-containing products
• Metformin diabetes medications

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it when remembered unless it's nearly time for your next dose. Never double your dose. Resume your regular schedule the next day.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms include:

• Unusual behavior
• Drowsiness or hallucinations
• Restlessness
• Fainting or lightheadedness

Seek immediate medical help for suspected overdose.

Storage

Store in a dry, airtight container at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F), away from light, children, and pets.
