Mysoline is a barbiturate used as an anticonvulsant to treat epilepsy, grand mal, psychomotor, and focal epileptic seizures. Its active ingredient, primidone, is metabolized into phenobarbital and phenylethylmalonamide (PEMA) in the body.
Take this medication two to four times a day as prescribed. Always follow your doctor's instructions. Do not alter the dosage or stop treatment without medical advice. Avoid exceeding the recommended dose.
Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants while using Mysoline, as they may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Do not suddenly stop this medication without consulting your doctor, as it may lead to status epilepticus. Mysoline may cause suicidal thoughts. Notify your doctor if you experience anxiety, depression, mood changes, hyperactivity, agitation, or restlessness. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, as this medication may cause excessive bleeding during delivery. Discuss any history of lung, liver, or kidney disease with your doctor.
Do not use Mysoline if you have porphyria or an allergy to primidone or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton).
Common side effects include allergic reactions (rash, itching, facial swelling, trouble breathing), dizziness, stomach upset, clumsiness, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or if you experience double vision, sore throat, fever, or seizures.
Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking, including seizure medications, griseofulvin, disulfiram, steroids, warfarin, digoxin, antidepressants, doxycycline, cyclosporine, narcotic pain relievers, muscle relaxants, antihistamines, and alcohol.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Symptoms of overdose are not well-documented. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor immediately.
Store Mysoline in a dry, tight container at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F). Keep it away from direct sunlight, children, and pets.
