Meclizine is an anti-emetic medication used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness, radiation therapy, and Meniere's disease. It may also be effective in managing vertigo caused by vestibular system disorders or inner ear issues.
The recommended adult dosage of meclizine varies based on the condition being treated. For preventing nausea and vomiting, take 25 mg to 50 mg about one hour before activity. Its effects typically last for 24 hours. Take the first dose at least one hour before traveling and repeat every 24 hours as needed, not exceeding two tablets in 24 hours. For inner ear disorders, the usual dose is 25 mg to 100 mg daily in divided doses. Patients receiving radiation treatment may take 50 mg 2 to 12 hours before the procedure. Vertigo is treated with 25-100 mg daily in divided doses. The pediatric dose is approximately half the adult dose. Take meclizine with a full glass of water. Fruit-flavored tablets can be chewed, swallowed whole, or dissolved in the mouth. Avoid using more than recommended or for extended periods.
Use caution when driving or performing tasks requiring alertness. Avoid alcohol consumption. Meclizine is not recommended for children under 12 years old. Use during pregnancy only if necessary, as it may impair thinking or reactions.
Do not use meclizine if you are allergic to it or have asthma, breathing disorders, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or urinary problems.
Common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, blurred vision, rash, constipation, diarrhea, and urinary retention. Rare but serious side effects may include low blood pressure, heart palpitations, hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Combining meclizine with alcohol, sedatives, or tranquilizers can intensify drowsiness. Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal products, and supplements. Do not start new medications without consulting your healthcare provider.
If taken as needed, a dosing schedule may not apply. For regular use, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
Overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness. Seek emergency medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected.
Store meclizine at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
