Lotrisone is an anti-fungal medication available as a lotion or cream. Its active ingredients combine a steroid (betamethasone) and an antifungal drug (clotrimazole). Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the growth of various fungi by disrupting the formation of their membranes. Betamethasone is a synthetic corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and suppresses the body's immune response.
Gently massage Lotrisone cream into the skin and the area affected by fungi twice daily (morning and evening). Avoid bandaging or wrapping the treated area to prevent excessive absorption. Treatment for tinea corporis or tinea cruris should not exceed two weeks, while treatment for tinea pedis should not last longer than four weeks.
Keep Lotrisone cream away from your eyes. Steroid medications can affect the adrenal, hypothalamic, and pituitary glands, potentially leading to elevated blood sugar levels or Cushing's syndrome. Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include acne, depression, excessive hair growth, a humped upper back, insomnia, a moon-faced appearance, muscle weakness, obesity in the trunk, paranoia, stretch marks, stunted growth (in children), wasted limbs, and increased susceptibility to bruising, fractures, and infections.
Do not use Lotrisone in children under 17 years old, individuals with hypersensitivity to its components, or those allergic to similar steroid and antifungal medications. Exercise caution when using it in adults over 65 years of age.
Common adverse reactions include localized redness, blistering, burning, dry skin, decreased pigmentation, stretch marks, and allergic reactions like hives. Other symptoms may include flu-like symptoms, bacterial infections, skin irritation, peeling, rashes, stinging, swelling, tingling, and edema.
Long-term use or discontinuation of topical corticosteroids may worsen psoriasis symptoms. Allow at least one week between stopping topical steroids and starting treatment with anthralin (Psoriatec).
If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, skip it if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not apply extra amounts. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day.
Excessive or prolonged use of Lotrisone over large skin areas may lead to conditions like Cushing's syndrome. Inform your doctor immediately if this occurs. A life-threatening overdose of Lotrisone is unlikely.
Store Lotrisone at room temperature, between 59-77°F (15-25°C), away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication after its expiration date.
