Lopid is a fibric acid derivative similar to fenofibrate (Tricor). It works by reducing triglycerides and increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of atherosclerosis, stroke, and heart attack. While its exact mechanism is not fully understood, Lopid is particularly effective in treating high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with pancreatitis.
The recommended dosage is 600 mg taken twice daily, 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner.
Lopid should not be used by individuals with an allergy to gemfibrozil, liver disease, gallbladder disease, severe kidney disease, or those taking repaglinide (Prandin).
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sharp stomach pain, jaundice, blurred vision, painful urination, eye pain, or see halos around lights after taking Lopid or eating.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose. Resume your regular schedule the next day.
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and joint or muscle pain. Seek immediate medical help if these occur.
Store Lopid at room temperature, between 20-25°C (68-77°F).
