Levocetirizine is a third-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic reactions. Levocetirizine is known for its fast onset of action and long-lasting relief. Unlike older antihistamines, it causes minimal drowsiness in most people.
The typical adult dose is 5 mg once daily, usually taken in the evening. It can be taken with or without food, and should be swallowed with water. For children, the dose and form (tablet or syrup) depend on age and body weight, and should follow a doctor's instructions. Avoid taking more than the recommended dose.
Most people tolerate levocetirizine well. Common side effects may include:
Seek medical help if you experience allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose, do not double up. Resume your normal dosing schedule. Missing a single dose is unlikely to cause serious issues but may temporarily reduce allergy control.
An overdose may result in symptoms such as:
Children may be more sensitive to overdose effects. In case of suspected overdose, seek medical attention immediately. Supportive treatment is usually sufficient.
