Levlen is a combination medication containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. It is primarily used as a contraceptive to prevent ovulation. The drug alters cervical mucus and the uterine lining, inhibiting sperm movement toward the uterus and preventing the attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterine wall.
Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions. Start taking Levlen on the first day of your menstrual cycle or the first Sunday after your period begins. If you are using Levlen for the first time, additional birth control methods may be necessary. Levlen is available in 28-day packs, with seven 'reminder' pills to maintain a regular cycle. Breakthrough bleeding may occur; if it is heavy or persistent, consult your doctor. Take one pill daily at the same time. Begin a new pack immediately after finishing the current one. You may need to temporarily stop using Levlen before certain medical tests or surgeries.
Additional birth control methods, such as condoms or spermicides, may be required when starting Levlen. Hormonal intake can increase the risk of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke, particularly in individuals over 35 or smokers. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, angina, high cholesterol, depression, seizures, epilepsy, diabetes, gallbladder disease, varicose veins, tuberculosis, uterine fibroid tumors, fibrocystic breast disease, lumps, or nodules.
Levlen should not be used by pregnant women or those who have recently given birth. It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of stroke, blood clots, circulation issues, abnormal vaginal bleeding, hormone-related cancer, liver disease or liver cancer, migraine headaches, heart valve disorders, severe high blood pressure, or jaundice caused by birth control pills.
In addition to allergic reactions (hives, rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing), Levlen may cause sudden numbness or weakness, vision problems, confusion, speech or balance issues, changes in migraine severity, chest pain, nausea, sweating, swelling of the extremities, depression, loss of appetite, stomach pain, dark urine, or jaundice. Seek medical attention if these occur.
Certain medications may interact with Levlen. Inform your doctor about all prescribed and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, and supplements you are taking. Pay special attention to interactions with theophylline, acetaminophen, ascorbic acid, prednisolone, St. John's wort, seizure medications, cyclosporine, barbiturates, HIV/AIDS medications, and antibiotics.
Missing a dose increases the risk of pregnancy. If you forget one 'active' pill, take two pills as soon as you remember and resume your schedule. If you miss two 'active' pills in the first or second week, take two pills daily for two days and continue your schedule. Use additional contraception for seven days. If you miss two 'active' pills in the third week or three pills in any week, start a new pack as if it is your first day. Missing two or more pills may result in the absence of a period. If you miss two consecutive periods, you may be pregnant. If you miss a 'reminder' pill, discard it and continue your schedule.
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Levlen at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F), away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom or areas accessible to children.
