Common Use

Levitra is an oral medication designed to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide, which is naturally released during sexual stimulation. Nitric oxide activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase, which produces cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This compound relaxes and widens the blood vessels in the penis, promoting blood flow. Levitra inhibits the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, preventing the breakdown of cGMP and sustaining blood flow to the penis.

Dosage and Direction

The recommended daily dose of Levitra is 10 mg, taken approximately one hour before intercourse. If no side effects occur, the dosage may be increased to 20 mg. If adverse effects are experienced, the dose should be reduced to 5 mg daily. Never take more than one tablet of Levitra in a single day.

Precautions

Levitra has not been extensively studied in individuals with cardiovascular disease. It is advisable to avoid Levitra if you have a history of stroke, heart failure, or a heart attack, particularly within the last six months. Inform your doctor if you have:

Levitra may also reduce the concentration of ritonavir and indinavir. In patients taking nitrates, Levitra can worsen chest pain by increasing heart rate and lowering blood pressure. It may also amplify the blood pressure-lowering effects of alpha-blockers like terazosin (Hytrin). Levitra should never be used with organic nitrates.

Missed Dose

Levitra is taken as needed, with a maximum of one dose per day. Therefore, a missed dose is not applicable.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose may include:

• Pain in the back, jaw, or arm
• Blindness or blurred vision
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Decreased vision

Storage
